QUEZON CITY, Philippines, 19 October 2018 – Metro Manila-based hotels received energy efficiency (EE) training from the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) in the second capacity building seminar held earlier today under a Department of Tourism (DOT) program implemented by the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc. (PCEPSDI). The seminar was conducted in the training facilities of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

Adopting the same training course used in the very recent capacity building seminar in Iloilo, PE2 presented energy efficiency modules relating to energy efficiency opportunities in the tourism sector, energy efficiency project implementation, and energy efficiency policy and financing options.

The participants included facility and environmental managers of large and small hotels (including one from Batanes and Babuyan islands), events and exhibition sector representatives (including government-owned Philippine Trade Training Center), and representatives of the Integrated Hotel Engineers Association of the Philippines (IHEAP).

PE2 trustees Alexander Ablaza, Raymond A. Marquez and Bienvenido C. Gonzales served as the EE resource persons of the day-long training event. GIZ senior advisor on climate change mitigation Maraida Licerio discussed the greenhouse gas emission impacts from refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Project officer Kiko E. Velhagen led the PCEPSDI implementation team in the seminar.

Both EE training seminars in Iloilo City and Metro Manila were organized under a broader 4-year UNEP-assisted capacity building program, “Transforming Tourism Value Chains in Developing Countries And Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to Accelerate More Resource Efficient, Low Carbon Development.”

The UNEP program is a joint undertaking of the DOT, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Programme.
