PE2 tapped to train tourism sector on EE

MAKATI CITY, Philippines, 23 August 2018 – The Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) was asked by the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc. (PCEPSDI) to provide energy efficiency expertise to build awareness and understanding of energy efficiency opportunities across industry players in the tourism sector.

The capacity building project is aimed at improving resource efficiency in key tourism sector value chains with high resource use, such as hotels, other tourist accommodations, food & beverage, and meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) sectors, and at transforming the industry into low carbon, resource efficient operations, in order to increase sustainability practices and reduce costs by businesses and tourists.

PCEPSDI proposes to tap PE2 expertise in the planning, preparation of materials and conduct of training seminars on energy efficiency opportunities, case studies and financing for the hotel and MICE sectors in two target training venues.

Under a broader 4-year capacity building program, the energy efficiency training seminars for the hotel and MICE sectors will be conducted in 2 key tourism zones: 1) Metro Manila – the largest urban agglomeration with its 16 cities, flagship tourism cluster and gateway with its concentration of large hotels (16,000 rooms) and MICE activities; and 2) Iloilo City, a fast rising tourism cluster with newly developed hotels and MICE facilities. The MICE tourism segment is especially important with the array of annual festivals, trade fairs, exhibits and concerts in cities, regions and provinces consuming large amounts of food & beverages, and potentially generating waste and carbon emissions.

The UN Environment Project “Transforming Tourism Value Chains in Developing Countries And Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to Accelerate More Resource Efficient, Low Carbon Development” is assisted through the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Programme and the Philippine Department of Tourism, as its country partner and implementing agency. Led by PCEPSDI, other executing institutions of the UNEP project include the Philippine Hotel Owners Association Inc, the Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers Inc, the Environmental Management Bureau – Climate Change Office, the Climate Change Commission, the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands Inc and the De La Salle – College of St. Benilde.

PE2 and PCEPSDI meetings are being scheduled next week to plan the Energy Efficiency Seminars to be held in Metro Manila and Iloilo in the months of September-October 2018.
