PE2 pitches first fuel in opening keynote of World Clean Energy Conference PH 2022
MAKATI CITY, 1 September 2022 –Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) president Alexander Ablaza called for the scaled-up deployment of energy efficiency as the first fuel in the country’s clean energy transition during his keynote message to open the second day of the World Clean Energy Conference Philippines 2022, held earlier today at the Dusit Thani Manila.
Ablaza said, “We need to remind non-clean energy practitioners that energy efficiency is one of the three major pillars of any clean energy transition.”
The PE2 head said that both the Paris agreement obligations by 2030 and Net Zero aspirations by 2050 will urgently need significant emission reductions through scaled-up energy efficiency. He explained that the International Energy Agency (IEA) and PE2 are positioning energy efficiency as the first fuel of the net-zero pathway toward 2050. Beyond its role as a net-zero component, Ablaza explained that the world will need a paradigm shift to reclassify energy efficiency as a primary energy resource in the energy mix, an infrastructure project type and a new investment asset class.
He explained that, in IEA’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 (NZE) Scenario, global energy demand in 2050 is projected to be around 8% lower than today but will need to serve an economy more than twice as big and a population with 2 billion more people.
“In the Philippines, over 9 million energy efficiency jobs can be generated through 2040, if the economy succeeds in mobilizing PHP 12 trillion in EE capital flows,” Ablaza adds.
The two-day World Clean Energy Conference Philippines 2022 gathered energy efficiency, solar, wind, geothermal, energy storage, grid/utility and digital industries in the country and Asia. It was jointly organized by the Global Zero Carbon Partnership and Escom Events.
